In May 2014, the 2nd Regional Workshop on Harmonizing Training within the scope of the RESAOLAB Program was held in Bamako, Mali. Over two days, participants shared insights and examined ways to improve initial and continuous training programs for the development of laboratory personnel. Human resource development is one of the seven pillars of the RESAOLAB initiative.
Participants and speakers discussed the role of a laboratory network in the face of epidemics such as the Ebola outbreak in Guinea. They explored many different aspects of initial and ongoing training, such as harmonizing national training plans, programs to train the trainers, candidates for training, validation of new modules, partners in delivering training, and the creation of a Bachelor’s Degree in Biological and Applied Medical Sciences (BAMS) for laboratory technicians: Diplôme Universitaire en Biologie Médicale Appliquée).
